biogas digester

Construction and use of a biogas digester Biogas systems can be built on any scale: small and simple for a single household, or large and industrial for a whole municipality. In Tamera we are interested in biogas digesters appropriate for a village or community
kitchen; we strive to make these with inexpensive, widely accessible materials and technology. As previously stated, biogas consists of about two third methane and one third CO2, with some water vapor and trace gasses (principally H2 S) and as such, without any alteration or purification, it can be used in all appliances made for natural gas for example cookers and water and space heaters and electric gensets with minimal modifications.
A basic biogas digester consists of a tank in which the organic material is digested, combined with a system to collect and store the biogas produced. The digesters can be quite simple, and the details vary depending on available materials and the needs of the community. Our biogas digester, built in cooperation with T.H. Culhane from Solar C³ITIES e.V., consists of a cylindrical 3000 liter tank, open on top, in which the organic material is digested. A second, slightly smaller tank is placed in the larger tank, upside-down. As biogas is produced, the inner tank fills with gas and rises, telescoping out of the outer tank. As biogas is removed for use, the inner gas storage tank sinks back into the larger, outer tank. In this system, the inner tank acts as both storage, and as a lid for the digester tank. The gap between the tank walls is narrow enough to prevent significant quantities of oxygen from entering the digester, which would kill the anaerobic bacteria that produce the methane.
The amount of biogas lost though the gap is negligible. 3000 liter digester is typically “fed” around 40-60 liters of biomass daily a few full buckets of ground up organic waste mixed with water and produces enough gas for several hours of cooking per day. The main sources of biomass are food scraps and kitchen waste. Non-woody garden waste is also appropriate. Before being fed into the digester tank, the biomass is mechanically macerated — chewed up — with an
“Insinkerator” garbage disposal.Nowadays these “waste disposal” machines are being rebranded as “feedstock preparation devices”and we call them “compost companions” because they can be used to prepare organic garbage for use in both anaerobic and aerobic decomposition processes.Grinding allows the bacteria to access and digest the organic material more easily; in an anaerobics ystem the transformation into gas and fertilizer can take as little as 24 hours while in an aerobic compost pile the transformation into soil can take as little as three to six days instead of months. For our biogas digestor a slurry of ground biomass and warm (40°C) water is poured into the tank inlet funnel. The inlet for the digester leads down to the bottom center of the digester tank. The digested organic material leaves as a high-quality liquid fertilizer, through an outlet near the top of the outer digester tank. At the top of the inverted, inner tank, there is an outlet for the biogas. Before normal operation, the biogas digester must be “started.” This is done by preparing a 1:1 mixture of fresh animal manure and water, and allowing this to ferment anaerobically for several weeks. The volume of this mixture should be around 200 liters for a 3000 liter digester or roughly 30-40 kg of animal manures per cubic meter of digestor tank space. Less can be used but it would simply take longer to establish the colonies of bacteria to enable feeding (feeding only starts once first flammable gas is produced). The slurry can be prepared in a seperate container or in the digester tank. The manure contains the naturally-occurring bacteria that digest organic matter and produce methane. Note that unlike in cheesemaking or yoghurt making biogas digestors do not rely on one strain of bacteria but depend on a balanced ecology of many different types of microbes – hydrolytic, acidogenic, acetogenic and methanogenic.

Fortunately these are all found in animal manure and even lake mud. Essentially any animal wastes can be used cow, horse, pig, and others; alone or mixed.Human excreta can be used as well, although in this case the fertilizer output of the digester should only be used on trees, or in other appropriate applications. Once the manure-mixture is producing flammable gas, feeding of the digester with biomass can begin. It is best to begin gradually, for example with 1/3 of the expected feeding for the first week, 2/3 for the second, and then onto a normal feeding regime. The maximum ratio is about 25 liters of feedstock slurry for every 1000 liters of digestor space.During normal operation, manures can still be included in the feed stock. Most energy has already been extracted from manure, but it can help maintain or replenish bacteria populations in the digester and help balance the pH. The pH and temperature of the digester will affect its performance. Biogas digesters prefer to be at a neutral pH; overfeeding with fats and carbohydrates and certain acidic feedstocks can lower the pH and damage bacterial populations while overfeeding with proteins (animal or vegetable) or nitrogen-rich materials (for example chicken droppings, feathers, skin, hair or slaughterhouse waste) can raise the pH and also damage the bacterial consortia. If one thinks of the digester simply as a stomach (for this is where the bacteria originated) and gives it a balanced nutrition, or if one thinks of it as a liquid compost pile and observes the usual C:N ratio of about 25 to 1, the system should last indefinitely. But if the bacterial ecology does get out of balance, one can simply restore the pH to neutral, add more manures, and start over, so it isn’t difficult to recover from improper feeding and one shouldn’t fret too much about “damaging” the system. Fortunately every one of us carries in our own guts all the materials we need to get things working again, and for this reason biogas systems are truly the easiest and most democratic of all forms of renewable energy. High temperatures can kill bacteria; low temperatures may cause them to become dormant. Different methane-producing bacteria respond to temperature differently; some prefer cooler temperatures as low as 17°C-20°C (psychrophilic). Others thrive at higher temperatures around 57°C (thermophilic). On the whole, however, biogas digesters well-suited to temperate climates work best at temperatures around 37°C (mesophilic). In most non-tropical climates, it may be worthwhile to insulate and heat the digester tank, for example with a solar hot water system. It can be helpful to put lake mud in the digester to populate the colder bottom regions with psychrophilic (cold-adapted) microbes.
The methane-producing bacteria are not adapted to floating free in a tank; they evolved to live in an
animal’s stomach, where they attach to surfaces while being exposed to flows of digestible material.
These conditions can be recreated by covering the bottom of the tank with porous stones or gravel and by
building high-surface-area “hi-rise” structures inside the digester tank (we call these “microbial motels”!).
Vertical structures which permit bacteria to inhabit all the temperature zones of the tank increase
efficiency – water separates into thermal layers with the coldest water accumulating at the bottom of the tank
and the warmest water at the top. Unfortunately, most biodigestors rely on bacteria living in sludge granules
on the cold tank floor to do most of the work.
By providing bacterial “elevators” or vertical “fuel rods” we give our “pet microbes” a chance to find the
zone within the thermocline most suited to their needs. We often build our “microbe motels” with recycled plastic tubing, striving for minimum impact on the flow of gasses and slurry in the tank. We find verticle plastic pipes with holes cut in them to let food in and bubbles out to work well (think of a pipe organ) but vertically strung nets also work as does filling the tank with “bio-blocks” or “bio-balls” or other typical pond filtration media used to encourage bacterial growth. One doesn’t need to buy them – we make them by chopping up old corrugated plastic electrical conduit; in Palestine our colleagues throw in the husks of almonds and pistachios; the idea is simply to have floating media upon which bacteria can form their active biofilms. The more surface area in the tank the larger your bacterial population and theoretically the more you
can feed them; the more biofilms there are the more efficient the bacteria making them up can work and
produce more gas and fertilizer (bacteria form what have been likened to “microbial cities” in their biofilms
where different regions engage in specialized functions). As Dr. Anand Karve, inventor of the ARTI India Telescoping biogas system we have adapted, said: “after all, we are talking about bacteria for heaven’s sake - bacteria that can be found anywhere and everywhere, even in our own stomachs!”
The effluent biogas is composed mainly of the following com pounds

Methane (CH4) 50 – 65 % (volume)

Carbon dioxide (CO2) 35 – 50 % (volume)

Moisture 30 – 160 g/m3

Hydrogen sulphide (H2 S) 5 g/m

The produced biogas is a colorless, odorless and flammable gas which has an energy content of 37.3 MJ/m3

The percent of m e thane to carbon dioxide varies depending on the input materials (feedstock) and the completeness of the process. The biomss used in this process has high moisture content, such as animal dung, sewage sludge, crop byproducts, and organic waste from household and industry.

Anaerobic digestion process is simply applied energy source. A simple digester consists of a digestion chamber, a dome, an inlet, an outlet f or biogas and an outlet for slurry. The biogas trapped by the dome flows under pressure through the outlet, where it can be used as an energy source. Shows a simple diagram for the anaerobic digester.
The biogas process is a natural process that takes place in a variety of anaerobic environments, such as the intestinal tract of animals, marine and fresh water sediment, sewage sludge, paddy fields, water logged soils and in the region of volcanic hot springs and deep sea hydrothermal vents. Anaerobic digestion is also occurred in the landf ill, where the municipal waste was buried in soil at very low oxygen concentration. The produced biogas (methane) can be collect by pipelines network and utilized as source of energy.

Anaerobic degradation or digestion involves the breakdown of bi omass by a concerted action of a wide range of microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. The general principle of biomass is the degradation of organic materials (e.g. carbohydrates, protein and fats) under anaerobic condition, where bacteria convert the organic material to methane, carbon dioxide and water. Acetate is the most important source of methane in the an aerobic environment; it formed approxim a tely 70% of the CH4, while, the remaining 30% of me thane is formed directly from hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
The first step in the anaerobic digestion is the hydrolysis of organic compounds into smaller units (e.g. the hydrolysis of proteins into amino acid). The hydrolysis process proceed s at various speeds depending on the com position of the biomass and may in some cases be a rate limiting step for the entire biogas process (e.g. the hydrolysis process will be rate limiting if cellulose is the main component in the biomass).

The second step is fermentation, where the hydrolysis products are absorbed by the fermentative bacteria. Th e products of fermentation process are smaller com pounds (e.g. acetate, fatty acids, alcohols and hydrogen). In a well functioning anaerobic digestion process, fermentative bacteria convert the largest part of organic materials to hydrogen, carbon dioxide and acetate. The remaining part of organic matter will be transformed into other lower fatty acids and alcohols. The opposite figure will occur in case that the fermentation process is not functioning well.
The third step is the oxidization of fermentative products to acetate and the reduction of protons
to hydrogen. This reaction is called Acetogenesis and it is catalyzed by a special group of bacteria. During this process, a certain amount of energy is produced depending on the type of reaction occurred. At low hydrogen partial pressure, the energy yield from this process is higher.
In the fourth step, interspecies hydrogen transfer is occurred. Hydrogen consuming organism s and hydrogen producing organisms are presented in the biomass. Both hydrogen consuming reaction and the hydrogen producing reaction will yield energy. The hydrogen concentration in the culture must remain within certain interval in order to make both reactions are running an d thereby producing m or e energy. Growth of bacteria in f locks increase the absorption of nutrients compared with free living organisms and thus make the energy utilization is m ore effective.

The fifth and the last stage is me thane formation. Acetate formed around 70% of the methane, while 30% is formed from hydrogen and carbon dioxide [3]. The different steps of biogas fermentation process are explained in simple diagram,

In a world almost completely dependent on fuel for many everyday luxuries of life, there is steady headway towards a more personalized solution to the fuel shortage problem in many parts of the world. Biogas is an alternative that allows people to produce their own fuel using waste. It also allows for a cleaner burn then wood making it a viable solution for developing countries that have excessive indoor air pollution.

Introduction

A constant hunt for alternatives to a world powered by unsustainable oil has yielded possible small and large scale solutions to the current issues in the industry. It also allows a way for developing countries to escape dependence on foreign infrastructure and imports that they do not have the means to pay for. One place this technology is taking root is in rural china, which still uses biomass such as wood and crop residue, as well as coal, for everyday needs. India is yet another country taking steps in this direction. There are individual projects pushing this technology, but they are largely academic primarily because this technology is still being spread. There are large-scale projects and companies that are using this technology, but the people using the technology are not generally buying kits or products; they are building their own. This is promising because in order for the fuel source to actually be taken advantage of, it has to be widely accessible to a wide variety of people. The actual digesters that create the biogas may be different in appearance, but they all tend to use the same general concepts.

History

This is, by no means, a new technology as is typical with many sustainable alternatives explored today. Possibly the earliest known usage of biogas was in the 10th century BC for heating bath water in Assyria (Harris). The first person known to show that decaying organic matter created flammable gas was Jan Baptita Van Helmont in the 17th century. Bombay, India has the first claim of a functioning digestion plant in 1895 by a leper colony. Biogas was even used by England as a source of fuel for street lamps in Exeter around 1895. We can only go off of documented accounts to get a comprehensive picture as to how biogas usage evolved, but what can be concluded is that it is and has been a viable fuel source for Centuries.

Context

Biogas is still an emerging technology for many countries around the world, but the two countries that have seemed to delve the deepest into this field are rural India and China. The Appropriate Rural Technologies Institute and Biotech appear to be major contributors to domestic fuel alternatives and waste usage in India. Many Chinese build their own systems but private industry is also there to lend a hand. Among them are Chongqing Wangliyuan Agricultureal Development Co. and Shenzhen Puxin Science & Technology Co. These companies not only sell digester parts and systems, they also sell a large variety of appliances that run off biogas. Another prominent group advocating a lot of this sort of technology and should be mentioned is The Global Alliance for Cookstoves. The goal of the alliance is to outfit 100 million homes by 2020 and they are partners with profit, non-profit, and public groups (including their biggest supporter: Shell).

The major reason in both countries for a switch to Biogas is indoor air pollution. Dung cakes used in India release toxins when they are burned to cook food (Tewari). This has lead to serious health problems including tuberculosis and lung cancer. According to the World Health Organization, “Burning traditional fuels indoors produces harmful smoke that contributes to an estimated 420,000 premature deaths each year in China.” (Peach). Women and children are most often affected by this plight and it leads to a death somewhere in the world every 20 seconds (WHO). The time spent cooking over a fire is most directly related to this statistic, which is why biogas should be considered for cook-stove use. There was debate as to whether the possible methane leaks would create even more problems with global warming, but after testing it was concluded that even with a few methane leaks anaerobic digesters, over a span of 20 years, would create up to 54 percent less warming then traditional fuels (Peach). The other issue that is true of all fuels is the fact that biogas is extremely flammable and is therefore a hazard if not used correctly. Social trends pushing the general population away from oil and towards independence on a personal level (as well as a public level) will spread biogas technology. Prices for current fuel options may also play a part in the shift.

Anaerobic digestion is the process leading to the creation of biogas. The general process starts by feeding organic wastes, and feces into the main chamber of the digester and allowing fermentation to take place (Spuhler). This is simply the change from non-soluble to soluble organic compounds. There is no oxygen in this process and the optimal temperature is 97 degrees Fahrenheit (Climatelab). Natural microbes aid in the breakdown and conversion of the material. The second step is acidification where the soluble organics become volatile fatty acids and carbon dioxide (Spuhler). They are then convert into acetate and hydrogen. The methane is formed last leaving a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide as the finished product. There are two different main types of digesters: dry or wet. The byproducts besides biogas include the water that went into the process as well as residual organic material that can fertilize crops. China tends to use a CFD or China Fixed Dome and India uses IFC or India Floating Cover (Climatelab). Maintenance cost is low, and the general cost is anywhere from 120- 600 dollars depending on the climate of the location. It is more expensive to build in a place like china because of the temperate climate. In general, this explanation applies to domestic units but holds true for other systems as well.

The gas can then be stored and used to fuel cook stoves. This solves a lot of the original issue because the fuel burns so much cleaner then wood or coal. The Global Alliance for Cookstoves reports that using biogas lowers emissions by 95 percent and cuts energy usage up to 70 percent. This is just one solution to the “1.9 million premature deaths annually, with women and young children the most affected (The Global Alliance for Cookstoves).

Analysis

China

Chongqing Wangliyuan Agricultureal Development Co. is a private company that sells to a great number of countries and sells a wide variety of products dealing with biogas. The Biogas Test Center of Agricultural Academy tests their products. Among their products they sell biogas digesters, enamel biogas anaerobic reactors, biogas appliances, fittings, generators, storage tanks, and more. They are located in Chongqing, China and employ engineers and chemists for the advancement of their product. They delve into environmental management, product design and macromolecule materials.

Shenzhen Puxin Science & Technology Co. is another private company who sells many of the same products as Chongqing Wangliyuan Agricultureal Development Co. and has many of the same goals. They also employ a similar staff with similar credentials. The goal is to find new energy that incorporates environmental protection. They are located in Gaungdong, China and have been up and running since 2001.

India

Appropriate Rural technologies Institute developed their domestic biogas plant in 2003. They are located in Maharashtra and are run by scientists and social workers. It is an academic group that started out with 9 original projects. Their products are not sold by them and are distributed instead by Samuchit Enviro Tech Pvt Ltd. Their goal is to raise people’s standards of living. They accept donations but there is no actually information on where the majority of their funding comes from that is easily accessible.

Biotech was established in 1994 and spreads awareness as well as training people to help others in various fields. Their focus is on renewable energy; development, and research. They are located in Kerala, India. There overall purpose appears to be to spread information; particularly there anaerobic digester systems.

Conclusions
Overall the options in India that I was able to find deal more with non-profit systems that share information for the greater good. All I could find out about the Chinese approach was through Private industry. All four groups I looked at wanted the same thing to some degree. It is relevant to look closely at both China and India because they are the prominent users of this technology. In this project I feel that most of the information is not actually recorded because so many people build there own digesters and do not look at the consumer world at all. The biggest problem is distribution because the companies that offer their products cannot offer them for free. If the impoverished cannot afford the consumer solution it makes sense that they would just build their own and bypass the middleman all together. This technology is extremely important and will continue to gain importance as time goes on, but it may be more of a cultural movement focused on the spread of the information rather then selling a product.

Forward
In July 2010 United States Forces Afghanistan (USFOR-A) were requested by General David H.Petraeus, Commander International Security and Assistance Force (COMISAF) to investigate the feasibility of biogas technology in Afghanistan. The leading purpose for the rural application of biogas is two-fold: alternative to burning manure and other organic material in the home, and returning nutrientrich fertilizer to the land. Research show these attributes benefit human health and the environment.USFOR-A Joint Engineer Directorate worked closely with United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Ministry of Energy and Water – Renewable Energy Department (Director Amir Mohammad Alamzai), Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, and Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock to investigate existing biogas technology in Afghanistan, identify competent contractors designing and constructing biogas digesters, and identify facilities and institutions with the potential to incorporate biogas technology. Director Alamzai provided USFOR-A contacts at the non-profit organization Agency for Rehabilitation & Energy Conservation in Afghanistan (AREA). AREA had demonstrated experience and knowledge in the design, construction and operation of biogas plants in several provinces of Afghanistan, specifically the fix-dome biogas digester made popular in Asia. USFOR-A contracted AREA to design, construct and operate an 8-cubic meter biogas plant at the Renewable Energy Department, Kabul in the winter and spring of 2010-2011. The biogas plant was completed in six weeks and fed dairy cow manure and water. The manual is based on both the Gobar biogas plant and the performance by AREA during the construction of the biogas plant in Kabul. We sincerely appreciate the support and direction from General Petraeus, Major General Timothy McHale (USFOR-A Deputy Commander for Support), Brigadier General Buckler (Director JENG), Brigadier General Mark Yenter (Director JENG), Brigadier General Mark Martins (Rule of Law Field Force), Colonel Louis Dell‟Orco, Lieutenant Colonels Dallas Olson, Butch Welch and Robert Tucker, PhD (JENG), Mr. Abdul Rasool Wardak and the folks with US Agency for International Development. We also appreciate the skill and work of Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Hart for turning rough sketches into professional Engineer designs and the financial process support of Captain Moses Wearing to ensure funding of this project through the Commander‟s Emergency Rsponse Program. We learned much about the practical design and construction of the biogas plant from Engineer Khail Shah and Engineer Arif Ulla Azimi of AREA and have shared these lessons in this manual. We especially thank Director Alamzai for his support and leadership to guide and direct the project at his facility in Kabul and of course thank the citizens of the United States of America for granting us the resources to accomplish this and many other projects to improve the security and legitimacy of the Government of the Islamic Republic of
Building an Anaerobic Digester

KCIS has been workin gon anaerobic digester designs for a while. Apart
from efficiency and safety, we have to look at cost.
We want the be able to offer an anaerobic digester to rural communitites
so that peple do not have to cut down trees for firewood or charcoal,
but we are also looking for a design that will furnish commercial premises
(hotels, etc.) with a reliable fuel supply for cooking and water heating.

Biogas - Anaerobic Digester Mk. 2

Organic waste is introduced through the screwed filler
cap where it is broken down by bacteria in the slurry. Heat is an important
factor, the process working best at around 40° C. Locating the Digester
tank in a sunny area will supply the necessary heat.
As gas is produced, it is forced through the Scrubber,
which helps to remove any sulphur compounds in the gas.
The methane then passes through the cleaner tank, which
removes any carbon dioxide from the gas. The gas is under pressure frpm
the header tank.
The header tank ensures that the Cleaner Tank has a
good level of water, and also puts the coollected gas under pressure.
The higher the header tank, the more pressure is produced.
From time to time, (about 6 months) the sludge is removed
from the Digester tank. This sludge, and any liquid recuperated, makes
a very good, sterile fertiliser. Any pathogens that may have been introduced
are killed off at 40°C, the working temperature of the digester.
We have built the simplest of anaerobic digesters to prove the
theory. We did not follow any of my designs due to cost constraints, but
have built it so that it can be improved later.
